Description
Today I found this tiny (mockingbird?) egg on the ground beside my porch trellis.
I picked it up, pretty sure that the bird inside had to be dead, but, as it turned out, when I stood very still, I could feel a tiny heartbeat, faster than my own, and it moved a tiny bit.
It was so amazing, holding a tiny unborn life in my hand. We found an inhabited nest nearby, that I think the egg fell from.
It didn't have any other eggs, so we decided to risk putting the egg inside to see if the birds would take care of the baby.
There's probably only a marginal chance of it surviving, but I like to think that we shifted the scales a little bit.
I snapped this picture very quickly, and I'm a beginner, so it's not a perfect work or anything.
